Estimating the wait time for a table at a restaurant seems anything but a science.

Diners will soon have a new tool to balance hunger and patience when Google adds a new feature to help dodge long wait times at popular NY restaurants. Now you can decide whether that cronut is really worth an hour wait or plan ahead to get your fix at a time when you can avoid a wait entirely.

Google did not indicate this is a feature on the way, so presumably it has already started to roll out to users in a phased manner.

Google says this feature will be rolled out to almost a million sit-down restaurants around the world.

If you're not one to risk being turned away from your favorite restaurants when you don't have a reservation, Google is introducing a new feature that will show you the busiest times at specific eateries.

In order to see the new estimated wait times, you'll simply tap on the hour bars in the Popular Times section, as can be seen in the image above.

"Wait time estimates are based on anonymized historical data, similar to how we compute the previously launched Popular Times and Visit Duration features, Quang Duong, software engineer for Google Maps, wrote in a blog post".

Data seems to make just about anything possible. The feature was spotted comparing the Pixel 2 with the Apple iPhone X.
