Health units say be prepared for flu season

Officials with the health department also said people who get the flu should stay home until 24 hours after your fever is gone without the help of fever reducing medicine.

Meanwhile, 69 per cent of health-care workers in 28 public long-term care facilities in the region got flu shots during the same time. The 2016-2017 seasonal flu vaccine was updated to include the new version of this protein; however, Hensley's lab found that the egg-grown version of this protein acquired a new mutation.

Vaccine producers have made flu shots with eggs for decades, but a new study says the manufacturing process curbed the efficacy of last year's shot and warns that the problem could repeat this year.

Currently, the difficulty that stumbles researchers is that flu viruses mutate rapidly.

"We need to get away from the antiquated production model, which the egg is", said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. They are antigenically similar to the strain of vaccine.

The flu can kill people, including healthy adults. "It's a virus that spreads quite easily, it's a virus that spreads before any symptoms are even visible". They only know at the end of the season if their vaccine was a good match. The 2016-2017 vaccine was only 43 percent effective against the predominant influenza A H3N2 strain, and protection has been nearly as low in other years. "During the 2014-2015 influenza season, clade 3C.2a H3N2 viruses possessing a new predicted glycosylation site in antigenic site B of HA emerged, and these viruses remain prevalent today", wrote the article's authors.

"To put this in other terms, our current influenza vaccine programs and technologies reduce influenza infections and hospitalizations by 4.75 percent and 6.9 percent, respectively", Weaver said.

After the experiment, the scientists now are looking forward to conducting more research in order to see whether or not the same vaccine might be applicable to humans too. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for the immune system to become protected.
